Orisson or Borda

Fail to prepare? reduce your risk by buying this book full of practical info.
2nd ed.
Orisson is currently taking reservations on their site.

It looks like Borda has not opened reservations for 2025 yet, but it should be soon.

Any idea when these two may start taking reservations for May 2025 ?
It’s amazing how much information is available to those who conduct a simple search on Google. I appreciate that there are those who think that members here may have insider knowledge; private phone numbers, a direct line to the proprietal shell-like…

It isn’t actually like that. We all rely on past experience, Godgle and a bit of random guesswork: even opinion. We’ll offer you opinions on just about anything but accurate information about the practice of a commercial business: ask the horse

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
I love the info I get in this forum, especially for those of us like me that are not very internet friendly and rely on the opinion and knowledge of those with experience in this forum. That being said, I did go on the website for Borda and did not have the patience to find where this one is located. Anybody knows? Is it an option to split the first day from SJPP to Roncesvalles on the main camino?

It's about 1km past Orisson, maybe 9km from SJPP. So, yes, you can split the journey to Roncevalles there.

I'm so happy you asked this! I was just able to book for me and my daughter for June. Thank you for the reminder!

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

Just checked Borda right now; all of 2025 is blocked-off, so no reservations being taken quite yet. Orisson as pointed out above is open, and (unsurprisingly) still lots of availability.

Please! They've just had a little vacation, so let them rest up and get back in shape for 2025.
IMHO all the places in SJPdP, Roncesvalles and in-between (regardless of location on the given route one may take) are not allowed to take vacations and MUST work 365/24/7
We'z the Pilgrims are a-Coming!!!
.....
SHEESH! 🤣

I haven't made any arrangements for a Camino starting in early April from SJPDP and am reluctant to do so, particularly '1st night on the walk arrangments'. I have walked in the past through Valcarlos; it's a good walk, 2 easy days for me. This time I'd like to go 'over the top' in 2 days. I see 1st night available is April 9th at Orisson. I have to think that there are many people who cannot honor their reservations to be in a particular place on particular night, often half way around the world! Perhaps there is a reasonable chance there would be a last moment opening either at Orisson or Borda that could be booked a week or two prior with a day or two variance (I would happily stay an extra night in SJPDP.) Anybody out there have an opinion as in 'I did it and it worked for me' or 'good luck, buddy' : ).

Because of the limited number of beds at Orisson and Borda I'd say "good luck buddy" is more likely. 😉

I've been at Orisson when pilgrims arrived just on dark without a booking, to find no room at the inn. They have very limited beds and so it's not an ideal scenario to start your Camino. On that night, I'll say that the owners were amazing, calling nearby farmers to see if they could take in a few people. The rest were transported back to SJPdP.....but the kicker here was that Orisson was full the next night too, so those pilgrims ended up doing that stage in whole the next day which was what they were trying to avoid. I give myself a day/two buffer to allow for flight delays and other unexpected joys of travel and book that first night.

Having said that you are walking early April, so the supply/demand ratio may be in your favour....or not. In the main, I agree with @trecile

Of course you can just try your luck - but both were fully booked out when I did it in April 2023. No cancellations either.

Remember that you can book the Express Burricot (check spelling?) bus to take down at the end of day 1 and back up for day 2, so that 2 nights in SJPdP also works. Day 1 in this option is the steepest part, can leave most of your stuff back in SJPdP and carry a light load.
Here is an old pic showing times, of course check if you end up doing this.

I believe Borda takes reservations after 17 Dec.
It is a beautiful place and I highly recommend staying here if you get the chance.

Transport luggage-passengers.
From airports to SJPP
Luggage from SJPP to Roncevalles

A very sensible solution is above

How do you make God laugh ?
Tell him your plans .

We commenced in May .... 16 years ago .....we had to go via Valcarlos which was a great stop.
The pass was closed.

May is the 2nd wettest month , April being the worst.
You have 7 and a bit hours of sunshine per day .

We have gone both ways , weather determines the enjoyment of the first day or two.
Valcarlos is 12km which means Burgette the next day .

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.

I walked the French Camino in April last year and it only rained on one day - and it was just a light sprinkle for an hour or so!
