A friend wants to come on the Portuguese camino with me, but long-distance walking in a day is not her strong point. If we were leave Porto using the coastal route, head inland at Villa do Conde to follow the central route to Santiago, would there be albergues less than 20 km apart?

Do you specifically want Albergues? Or are you interested in all types of lodging? If the latter, we did your route in June/July with very few 20K+ days, but didn't stay in municipal Albergues.

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.

It's not long distance walking. It's walking a short distance and have a coffee. Walk another short distance and have a coffee and croissant. Walk another short distance and have a light lunch. Walk another short distance to your bed for the night and sit around with others with a glass of wine or take a nap. Walk to the little store next door for tomorrow 's snack. Repeat.

One of my favorite pilgrims of all time, a fellow whose physical appearance and general mindset lent much doubt as to his aptitude for long distance walking, very cleverly broke every day down into 5km segments.

Distance to second breakfast: One Five.
Distance to subsequent coffee: Half a Five
Tired after that, but the end of the day was only Three Fives away.

He outwitted all of us that summer.

...and ship it to Santiago for storage. You pick it up once in Santiago. Service offered by Casa Ivar (we use DHL for transportation).
I’m doing that route and averaging 10-12 miles per day. The hard part is those first two days on the coast because there’s only one place I could find at the midway point between Porto and Vila do Conde. It’s a little hotel vs an albergue. Happy to share my spreadsheet with you if you DM me. Also she can always take a bus or taxi if she is struggling and you can still hang out in the evenings.

Ideal pocket guides for during & after your Camino. Each weighs only 1.4 oz (40g)!
There is also the Orbitur campground in Angeiras. Little cabins at a pilgrim price.
Yeah, staying (currently) at Casa Velha near Perafita. I saw the campground and it looked lovely. I might go back and reconsider once reservations open there but with so little available in that area, I just grabbed what I could. I also appreciate being closer to the ocean since I’m only there for a couple of days. I allegedly have an ocean view… lol not holding my breath!

For pilgrim rates it's walk in only, but the place is huge. I didn't have any problem getting a place there in May 2022. Be aware though that the little "bungalows" for pilgrims don't have bathrooms - the bathrooms are a little walk down a trail.

Okay, thanks! I’m walking in mid April so it should hopefully be easy to get something if I decide to go further that first day.

Train for your next Camino on California's Santa Catalina Island March 16-19
From Porto, consider stopping in Matosinhos overnight, then the next day Vila Cha, then go through Vila do Conde to the next stop, depending on if you stay along the coast or switch to the central. There are lots of small towns to stop in.

For some of us, walking 23km, especially that first day walking out of Porto is simply too much. It doesn't matter if you stop for coffee or lunch, and walk some more and do that several times. 23km is still 23 km. and some of us just can't do it.

It is easy to keep your Camino at only 12-15km per day if those are the distances you prefer to walk.
