Primitivo

Ideal pocket guides for during & after your Camino. Each weighs only 1.4 oz (40g)!
if you have a few spare days i would fly into Madrid and get to Leon on public transport (you choose bus or train or fly if you want to - I would pick train because it is cheap and comfy and fast), then walk the San Salvador from there to Oviedo

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
I suppose it depends on where you think it starts. Like all Camino routes, there are options. Personally i would go for Oviedo, so flying in to Madrid could work for you, then get the train. Or if you have more time, start on the North, maybe Bilbao.

I will lead a group of 8 on the Primitivo in May. We are American, British & Canadian expats currently living in Guatemala. We’ll will fly into Madrid, rent a van and drive to Oviedo. We will walk from there, except for the one group member who will drive the van in support because we range in age from 58 to 84 and have a variety of health issues. We will arrive in Oviedo on May 2nd, leave there on the 5th, and plan to get to Santiago on the 22nd. Hope to see you on the Way!

I’m also planning to walk the Primitivo in May, beginning May 3 in Oviedo. I’m flying from NY to Madrid, and traveling by train to Leon for a day and then by train to Oviedo the day after that. Perhaps we’ll find each other. Buen Camino!

...and ship it to Santiago for storage. You pick it up once in Santiago. Service offered by Casa Ivar (we use DHL for transportation).

Our group will stay 3 nights at the Soho Boutique Oviedo, 02/05/2025 to 05/05/2025. If you’d like to meet up while we are there, stop by and leave a message for Tom Ward at the front desk.

We will overlap with you the 2nd/3rd and follow after you on the 5th. If you’d like to get together late on the 2nd, let me know either here on by stopping by the Soho Boutique Oviedo (near the cathedral).

Thanks! I'll private message you closer to the date and perhaps we'll have the chance to meet. Happy planning!

Salvador was wonderful. If doing it again,I would stop after 12 km,skip la robla and stop in mieres. Make the next day easier,as the walk

I’m thinking of the Primitivo in May. How would I get to the starting point. ( I’d be traveling from New Uork)

Thanks very much
The salvador is wonderful. If I were to do it again I would stop in cascantes(pardon my memory) after 12km,skip la robla and stop in the next town. No food but very nice, and making the steep walk in the morning when I would be fresher. Just a thought.

Or if you don't have that much time, fly into Madrid, get to Chamartin station, then fast train up to Oviedo. Easy.
Thinking about the fast train to Oviedo. It stops several times to Leon, waits for guage-changing the cars, then a winding slow trip through the mountains.

We are doing this options in May. Might see you on the Primitivo

I walked the Primitivo this past May and found it easy to get to Oviedo. I flew to Madrid arriving early ( 6:30) and within 2 hours caught a early flight to Oviedo($90) never leaving the terminal .
I used similar technique from Toronto, pretty much all overseas flights to Europe are red eyes giving ample time to catch connections. The OP will have similar success from New York.
I arrived Oviedo mid-afternoon, found a nice place, did some walking around and was happily on the trail the next morning....big smile emoji

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.

Fly to Madrid ........its been 14 plus hours since you woke up
Get on the train and relax
After 3 hours you are in Oviedo

You could also fly from Madrid to the Oviedo/Asturias airport. Last I checked, Iberia had at least a couple of flights a day. There’s a bus right from the Oviedo airport into the city.
Do you know if you need to book flights from Madrid to Oviedo in advance, or do they run frequently enough that it's not necessary? Thank you.

Hmmm... sometimes.

See the nice part about flying it is generally quiet.

I'd say about half of my train rides in Spain have been kinda loud. IMO some travelers have not fully embraced the culture of headphones or silent mode on their phones... I remember a similar journey after landing in Madrid, trying to relax on a train ride to Seville after landing, and constantly being "alerted" by the phones of fellow passengers, the occasional audible youtube video, and full on phone conversations.

Other times it has been totally chill.

Hi All! I’m here again with yet another question … Can anyone recommend a trustworthy travel insurance company? One that includes coverage for trip cancellation, medical, etc. Again, thank you!!!
I’m trying to find a nonstop flight from Santiago to Lisbon . Does anyone know if there is such a beast? I used Ryan Air last year from Santiago to Madrid :: they don’t have flights to Lisbon.
