Somport in early May

Time of past OR future Camino

Camino Sanabres
Last year I walked Camino Aragonese in June, and I like to do it next spring again. Is it possible to walk over Somport the first week in May ? Do you recommend another route this time of year ?

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
I think it’s always a year to year and day to day but we went over the pass this year on April 3rd in glorious sunshine. They were still skiing at Candanchú but just barely. I would think May would probably safe. @trecile went over about a month +/- later and may have some thoughts.

Enjoy!

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
All good on April 3, 2024. The path up to the frontier was still snow covered, we took the road for the last 30-45 minutes.

BTW, 6 days later, full on blizzard across the Pyrenees. We were down below by then and only got rain. Another Pilgrim sent me a pic at the pass. Our timing was good or we just got lucky.

Should be ok, but if you start in France, there may be road works and trail damage up to the pass on that side from weather late this year. Maybe just take the bus to the Somport pass and start there.
Posts on the Facebook page for Via Tolosana, referencing local authorities regarding the road and the opinions of gite owners in Oloron and Borce regarding the Tolosana, indicate N134 will likely be open in early 2025 and the GR653 by spring. Someone who posted to Facebook a few weeks ago said he simply walked around the collapsed section on the still-intact unpaved highway shoulder and roadwalked up to Somport, not that such a variant is officially blessed. Hoping this is correct as I plan to return to Castres in May and pick up where I left off last August.

Walked it in early May started at Somport Pass this year as a solo female and had no difficulties. Only 1 cyclist passed me at the beginning. Didn't see another pilgrim. Loved it. Buen Camino
