I will be walking the Primitivo for the first time. I wanted to start at the end of march, but worried about accommodations being open. I am reconsidering and will probably start on April 1. Is it necessary to reserve ahead?

Welcome to the forum.
That early in the year I doubt very much that it would be necessary to book ahead. I seldom bothered last year in July (which is far busier).
However you might want to check on Gronze as to when the Albergues are going to open. Or even direct if you have somewhere specific you wish to stay.
This year for example many only opened shortly before Easter. I'm not sure if this is a traditional pattern or not. If so, remember Easter is 3 weeks later next year (20/4).

Hello. I started from Madrid on 27th Feb this year and found accommodation no problem. In fact I was the only person in the albergues. I then continued on the camino Frances to Ponferrada and then the Camino Invierno/Sanabres to Santiago then out to Muxia.

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
No need to reserve at all!
If you want to be sure you can sleep where you want, you can always contact the albergue around noon that same day.

The OP is walking the Primitivo.

What route are you talking about? I haven't walked the Primitivo, but on many quiet routes I would not advise waiting until the same day to check out the accommodation!
