Fly out to Lisbon on Saturday!!

Hello all,

I’m about to embark on my first Portuguese Camino! From Lisbon to Santiago de Compostela, 385.25 miles over 29 days of walking, but 31 days total because I’m giving myself an extra day on arrival in Lisbon, once in Porto and finally when I arrive at the cathedral.

This will be my second Camino, having done the Primitivo in September 2022, which was incredible.

I’m so excited and I’ve trained for months, so I think I’m ready! I’ve also worked really hard to get through a foot injury with PT and new shoes and retraining how to walk by changing my gait. The pain is gone now and I hope it stays that way!

I’m starting to pack and I just wanted to share my excitement. I live in Paris, France and I arrive in Lisbon on Saturday and begin walking on Monday morning. Wishing all of you walking Caminos the very best on your journeys. Maybe I’ll meet some of you along the way. Buen Camino!!

Bom caminho, @WendyD72 , and fingers crossed for you that your feet continue to be pain-free.

You probably know you can get your credencial in the cathedral, but I wanted to point out that there is also a pilgrims office nearby, kind of hidden away, but apparently with lots of good info for pilgrims. It is open every day. Here’s a thread with all the info.

Wishing you an amazing first Camino, @Browncow! Perhaps we will meet along the way. I was excited and apprehensive with my first one and while it wasn’t easy, clearly I loved it enough to be putting myself through it again, lol. I hope your injured foot behaves itself along with mine!

Hi Wendy, I’ve recently started from Lisbon, and this is my first Camino. I was in Lisbon for 4 days so spent one of those days walking with my pack to Póvoa and then catching a train back to Lisbon. Today, I set off from Póvoa (train ride to get there, very easy) and am now spending my first official night on the Camino in Villa Franca de Xira. I’m loving it already and this is a beautiful town/village. Maybe we’ll cross paths along the way. Buen camino to you.

Hi Wendy, I’ve recently started from Lisbon, and this is my first Camino. I was in Lisbon for 4 days so spent one of those days walking with my pack to Póvoa and then catching a train back to Lisbon. Today, I set off from Póvoa (train ride to get there, very easy) and am now spending my first official night on the Camino in Villa Franca de Xira. I’m loving it already and this is a beautiful town/village. Maybe we’ll cross paths along the way. Buen camino to you.

Bom Dia WendyD72! I walked for a week from Lisbon to Tomar in June -- enjoyed the journey! There was a variety of landscapes -- from industrial/manufacturing areas on the outskirts of Lisbon, to vast agricultural fields, to a wooded area near Tomar -- very different than the first week on the Primitivo (have walked that too) but with its own unique charms. Also did the 'back and forth' from Povoa (Ubering, though) like PaulaKH did so as to even out daily mileage in the first few days -- it worked well. Stayed in lovely towns including Vila Franca de Xira, Azambuja, & Santarem. There were a few days walking in 90+ degrees then -- keep aware of the stretches without facilities & bring extra water. Forgot to mention that the path through Lisbon can be tricky -- I used a combination of my Brierley guide, the Camino Ninja app (with a map that shows the trail & where you are in relation to it), the Wise Pilgrim app, and a list of street names to follow. The list was given to me at the Pilgrim Office (mentioned by peregrina2000) -- I also recommend stopping by there for info -- they have shells available too --

Great to hear from others that have enjoyed the Camino from Lisbon. I’ve heard so many people say that it’s too industrial etc. and it is in parts but I wanted to walk through Portugal and happy to see it all. I bet you’ll be great! I’m a big planner so I understand the nerves, but I’d like to do one year where I don’t plan it and see how it goes. I think what you’re doing is awesome and I’m sure it’s going to be a great adventure. Keep us posted!

I walked from Lisbon at the end of September last year and I enjoyed my walk out of Lisbon. I didn't mind the short industrial area, in fact I found it interesting. Shortly after that there's the area where a world expo was held some years ago and I enjoyed that too.
After that there's the new wooden path alongside the river where I saw several flamingos. The weather was hot and sunny and after the grey cold weather of the UK's summer last year, I was walking with a huge grin every day.
The friendliness of the locals along the whole Camino was lovely too.

Thanks, @jascreative and @PaulaKH for all of this. I just realized that I forgot to pack my shell from the Primitivo so I’ll head over to the pilgrim office tomorrow to buy one before I head out. I also ended up buying the whole central Portuguese Camino book from @ellebieling. It looked great and while I know it’s pretty straightforward, I have no internal compass, lol, so I can use the extra help!

Oh Wow! 40kms!! You are moving! Are you in Villa Franca or further? I’m currently in Porto de Muge, beautiful day today through the tomato harvesting areas and vineyards. I will l be in Santarem tomorrow (Monday). You will overtake me very soon I think

I do not think I will overtake you! I just got a head start today but it’s not gonna be like that every day. You are correct, I am in Vila Franca, heading to Azambuja tomorrow.
