26yrs ago my older brother (by 2yrs) decided to organise a charity cycle ride from Southport to Liverpool to raise funds for Marie Currie and it has been attended every year since, even though COVID only 6 riders were permitted. To date it has raised £80,000 and it was Phil’s wish to reach £100,000 but sadly Phil passed away a couple of weeks ago, a tragic loss and we all grieve for him and his family.
At his funeral last Friday the response was so heart warming, family, friends from near far and even people who only met him briefly came to pay their respect and tribute to a real gentleman, a giant.
At his wake I met up with friends of Phil’s who have decided to walk the last 100kms. More than 60 guys from Liverpool and around the UK and Northern Ireland are joining together about the 9th September to walk the camino.
We are still hoping that Phil’s legacy ride will continue this year and reach his dream target.
In memory of Phil

I am sorry to hear about your loss, but glad to hear that his friends are coming together to support his cause and continue fundraising for Marie Curie. I did have to look that up. I doubt that it is something other than UK forum members might know that Marie Curie is a charity organization. For those that don't know about this end of life charity, their website is here: https://www.mariecurie.org.uk/

Thanks dougfitz. Marie Currie are a tremendous foundation charity and St Zavs which is a school in Liverpool and where Phil took the name St Zavs riders who ride the charity event have a fantastic relationship with Marie Currie through Phil.

I’m sorry to hear of your brother’s passing and I hope the tribute-Camino goes well.

How are they handling the logistics? A 50-strong group would be a nightmare to coordinate, even on the last 100. 50 senior scousers will be like a processional party.

That was my question to them but they’ve been really good booking the large albergues where possible and spreading out across the smaller ones where needed, the patrons have been really helpful helping them book ahead, real Camino community spirit.
