Options for cell service on Camino Norte

My two college age kids are walking the Camino Norte in a few weeks and are trying to determine the best options for cell service. They have WhatsApp when wifi is available but want to have general cell service. Is it best to get a SIM card or E SIM when they arrive in Spain, buy a burner phone in Spain, or another option? They will fly into France and start from San Sebastian so will not come through Madrid.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
There really isn't such a thing as a burner phone in Spain. It would think it would be best to buy a sim card if they are starting in San Sebastian if they need data and cell service.

...and ship it to Santiago for storage. You pick it up once in Santiago. Service offered by Casa Ivar (we use DHL for transportation).
I always use Vodafone. It's very cheap and offers a lot of data. There are a few shops in San Sebastian. Make sure they bring their passports with them and that their phone is unlocked.

Thank you!
I second why @Mananath said.
They have excellent and cheap prepaid plans. I always use them as I walk long Caminos and always have to recharge. Super easy to do it online. They send you a text message and remember you need to recharge the day after their plan ends ( I think each period is 28 days). They need to recharge with the same plan that they originally signed up for. The first thing I do when I arrive is go to a Vodafone office in the city I arrive in. Make sure they check the opening and closing hours and the offices are closed on Sundays. They also close early on Saturdays.
