Hi Trecile in the past I hiked with my pack and would certainly never have considered bag transfer.
As previous suggestions I'm going to look at a fitted daypack option, as you say with hipbelt etc.

Definitely will have 2 bags as there is no way I can carry spare clothes, toiletries, sandals, fleece etc along with daytime needs of water, snacks, sketchbook.

Is your main bag a backpack? If so and you like it, look for a smaller bag from the same company. If you are sending a suitcase or duffel ahead, try out some of the more popular brands (Osprey, Deuter, Gregory) in 15-22L.
