    León Restaurant Recommendations

A good Italian restaurant is Topo near the Cathedral.

    Injinji Wool Liners Only?

Yes, it can be hot in the summer. It really depends if you will have a combination of socks (Injinji liners) and shoes that will prevent blisters and sore spots. That’s what will count. I have used Injinji liners and a thin no-show ankle sock and this combination has been great for me even in...

Last minute decisons - fleece or puffer?

I have agonized about this too. The extra weight is not helpful. I did the Frances from León to Santiago last month and decided to take a light puffy and use my rain jacket as a windbreaker too. It worked very well. Some mornings I had all my t-shirts on under my puffy and took off layers as...

US International Phone plan or Spanish SIM card while on the Camino?

Lots of responses are offered. My US plan (Visible with Verizon) does not offer an international plan. Last month I got a Vodafone eSIM with only data. It worked very well for me to use apps and WhatsApp to call home. 12€ for 5GB for 10 days. Then top up at 2.50€ for 1GB for 5 days. My friend...

    Is the Botafumeiro Swinging Again?

I was in Santiago over the weekend and the Botafumeiro was not in the Cathedral. Not even the ropes.

    Holy Week Experience

I was in Santiago for the weekend and of five or six processions only two on Friday happened. The rain prevented the others. Nonetheless the ones I saw were impressive and moving.

    Liner Socks

I recommend Injinji liner toe socks inside a hiking sock. It’s the best combination for me.

    Vodaphone Travel eSim

I followed the instructions sent by Vodafone. First did the download at home and then turned on the data plan when I landed in Madrid. It worked very well.

    Vodaphone Travel eSim

That’s what I’m using right now on the Camino Frances. And I’m pleased with it. I can use WhatsApp to call home. The signal has been very good so far.

    Astorga to Molinaseca

I can answer my own question now. 🙂 I walked from Astorga to Foncebadon on March 18 and to Ponferrada on March 19. The path above Rabanal is rocky and often flooded by melting snow runoffs. It’s a careful walk and trekking poles are very helpful. There are a few patches of snow left along the...

    Astorga to Molinaseca

I’m seeing snow on the mountains west of Astorga and wondering about road. And also wondering about accommodations— no responses to emails inquiring about reservations. Some Albergues might not be open contrary to what the Wise pilgrims app says.

    Astorga to Molinaseca

I’m wondering what the Frances route looks like this week between Astorga to Molinaseca. Has anyone on this forum been walking it recently? Are Albergues open and is the route good? We will be heading that way in a day or two.

    Bouncing between Central and Coastal

Last May, my wife and I started on the Coastal from Porto and enjoyed it for a couple days and then switched to the Central. We found the constant wind from the ocean and sand to be a little much. Also, the lack of infrastructure for pilgrims along the route was a detriment to us. To find a...

    Accommodation for Madrid airport

I have stayed in hotels in Barajas a few times and it is convenient. It is one metro stop to / from the airport. Taxis from the airport are 20€ (a flat fee) and less than that (about 12€) to the airport if you have an early flight. I’ve used Booking.com to reserve a hotel.

Bad experience with Orange International Travel phone plans

I’m sorry you had this experience. I’ve used Orange a couple times and I found it worked very well for me in multiple countries. But the set up of their eSIM is complicated with lots of detailed steps to follow. If you miss a step it may cause the eSIM to not be activated. This happened to my...
