I passed through there in 1990 and even by then Maria was the sole resident. Her son lived with her part of the year but I was told he was away doing seasonal work in another part of the country. It was an extraordinary place back then. -

I remember Foncebadon in 2012. We were told the last person to live there (an elderly lady) had not long since died and it was empty. And so it was. Look at it now! 😎

I can see where this will help in the eternal search for an open alberque. These "pilgrims" will by-pass many towns and communities during their "walk" leaving many alberques available for others...

The municipal albergue does not accept reservations. First come, first served. So there may be beds there on the day. When the beds there are full then a sports hall has been made available for people to sleep on the floor. Not everyone's first...
