That's exactly what I do. I keep my passport and my pilgrim credential together in the same zippered pouch, and it's become second nature to hand both over when I'm checking in, whether it's an albergue or a hotel.
I have met a few pilgrims walking with no support - and they are honest about it, to them I generally feel some generosity- it is an interesting commitment to walk in such a way. And it is actually a long standing Christian practice to set out...
