I would check Booking.com. There are hundreds of hotels in Madrid. We are staying in Meliá Reina Victoria in October which is pretty central. Depends on your budget.
I don’t understand why this couple feel that they should be bound by official stages. You don’t have to walk a set path or a set distance and if you want to “detour” to view a place of interest then there are no rules to stop you doing that!
I think it everyone’s right to take or reject any advice given. I did a whole load of reading before my Camino and bought some lambs wool after reading about it helping cushion blisters. It was absolutely invaluable and I wouldn’t have been able to carry on without it.
Well I certainly helped in May. Eight nights accommodation in hotels and guest houses and fully enjoyed my food and drink. Only had one pilgrim’s menu in 8 days. Like others have already said, I don’t mind sharing my money with the Spaniards
