Another idea is that you can keep your pilgrim credential and come back to finish another year from Astorga to Santiago! It does become habit-forming for many of us.🥰
As has been stated, the Compostela is for those who arrive on foot, bicycle, or horseback to Santiago. But, you will have your credentials full of stamps that you get along the way, which in my opinion is a much better reminder of my journey.

Overflow on a rainy day in June 2023 meant that I "slept" in the choir loft with 6 others. Wrestling mats, although I think mats in the normal areas are softer.
We slept on the mats there in Spring 2014. It's a tie with Güemes on the Norte in Spring 2023 as our favorite communal meal and albergue experience. It was a wonderful lovely time. A comfortable night's sleep is overrated! ;)
I always get there early to be sure of a good spot and snag two mats to ensure a good night's sleep. It's unmissable, a memory never to be forgotten. Like the open donativo box labelled "give what you can, take what you need" and their practise...
No you cannot, but they never turn anyone away. Be aware that you will sleep on a mat on the floor. I always say it was the best albergue experience, but the worst nights sleep...🤣
