I recommend the really cheap Primark gloves (a pack of 2 is about £2.50). I wear one or both pairs, depending on how cold it is. They get wet, but dry quickly.
In an 'emergency' the socks option also works...
That’s my solution too. Since waterproof gloves leave my hands cold, and since I can stand wet hands more than cold hands, I always bring a pair of lambswool gloves. They insulate even when wet.
