NYSE replied to the thread Injured after stage one and upset.
Same here. When I walked the Frances I saw more injuries to the young than old. It takes decades to learn ones limitations. I guess we oldies can chalk it up to experience.

Try to imagine that you are 70 years old rather than in your 20's and plan and walk like a 70 year old. In my observations the majority of injured people who I noticed at Roncesvalles were young people. Start slow and work up to the 9 hour days...

NYSE replied to the thread The dreaded descent into Zubiri.
The decent into Zubiri is not extreme. Not even when wet. If you take your time with your footing and have good walking sticks to help balance, you should be fine. Oh, those worn stones can be slippery, but I don't think they should lead anyone...

NYSE replied to the thread Walking in Rain.
Last October it rained so hard for so long, nothing worked. Anything remotely rainproof makes one sweat - bad. Went I took all my protective layers off, I was still soaked. A poncho does help keep the bag dry. I walked with a bag cover and...

Nerd Alert: Lots of early church fathers (Gregory of Nyssa, Gregory of Nazianus, Basil of Caesarea, John Chrysostom, etc.) criticized early Christian pilgrims for wanton behaviour, gluttony, drunkenness, and failure to appreciate the true purpose...

NYSE replied to the thread Preparing to sleep rough?.
I always tried to end my walk by 2pm. This is the time most albergues open. You’ll usually find a bed at that hour. Then you can head out for a big pilgrim lunch.
