The article mentions 5 women in 5 years when around half a million pilgrims walk the caminos each year. I expect the statistics would be worse for any european city so why highlight the camino?
Thought the Valcarlos route was simply stunning. The elevation gain, though, comes on day 2. Anyway you cut it...there's no avoiding the climb to Roncesvalles.
napoleon route is closed, so it's up through valcarlos. pretty tough to get from sjppdp to roncesvalles in one day, probably want to overnight in valcarlos.
If I end my life on the Camino, I will at least have left this life while doing something spectacular and close to my heart. Much preferred to a lonely deteriorated life in a nursing home.

If the albergue has a set price (not a donativo) then being €5 short is, indeed, a valid reason for denying you a bed. Similarly, if you are €5 short at the supermarket, it is a valid reason for the cashier to deny you the food you are trying to...
