I had a mix of cotton and synthetics on my first Camino and I too survived :D Cotton hiking shorts and synthetic tech t-shirts. Subsequent Caminos find me in all synthetic tech shirts and shorts, and fleece. You are correct, stuff like merino... -

I used to think the whole "best fabric" debate was just people being geeky about hiking - then I discovered merino. Since then I've upgraded almost my entire travel/hiking wardrobe, except for my pants. And if somebody told me that there exists...

Cotton fabrics are heavy and take longer to dry if hung on a line. The wool fabrics are good, but expensive and some cannot be dried in a dryer lest they shrink up. Also, as I said they are expensive so if you lose one, forget one at an albergue...

Cotton blouses are not the same as cotton t-shirts. They dry really quickly. They have worked really well for me on 4 of my 6 Caminos, from 0°C to 30°.

I am the odd one here. I really like to wear long-sleeve, cotton blouses. I can roll up the sleeves when it is hot, leave them down for sun protection, wear them with a long sleeve turtle neck t-shirt if it gets cold, and they wash and dry so...
