I've tried dozens of watches in 60+ years. I really like my AW02 which is very thin, waterproof, and at a glance I see day of week and date and time. Also has alarm, stopwatch, countdown timer, hourly chime, backlight, and costs about $20.
By the time pilgrims get toward the end of their trip, they're just carrying those walking staffs. They are baggage rather than a needed implement. Not worth it for the couple of times they are a help.
I was hospitalero in the pilgrim hostel, Albergue San Nicolás de Flue, in Ponferrada. Hospitaleros are resting and doing other tasks until early afternoon. Great place to stay on your first night. You can get the credencial there.
My first Camino was Paris - Pamplona 1991 at age 49, on to Santiago the next year. Seven others since including my longest, Arles - Santiago at age 77.
All by bicycle. My wife has done the Camino on bike and walking. She says bicycle is harder...
I have ridden the Chemins in France 5 times, including crossing the Pyrenees 4 times. Have used 700 x 25 on a Trek 520 and 26 x 1.25 on a Bike Friday. Had no problems except for deep mud once.
