One of the highlights for me in 2015 was stopping to chat with David. What a wonderful person. Sad to hear that he has now packed up and moved on, but understandable after so many years.

@Robo - David will be missed. He was standing in a raging wet weather river helping pilgrims cross. His girlfriend Suzie was operating a warming station and serving hot tea on the very cold and wet day last May. I am honored to have his Sello in my passport.

Luckily for all of us, David is back (or at least was back in June 2017, when I walked the Camino Francés). His stand was such a wonderful place to stop and take in the spirit of the camino and was one of the highlights of the walk for me. Here is a photo of him and this is what I wrote at the time:

Camino de Santiago, Day 28. The spirit of the Camino manifests itself in different ways to different pilgrims. For me, it has never shone brighter than at David's refreshment stand in the middle of nowhere on the trail today. David, pictured here giving a glass of watermelon juice to a six-year-old Nigerian-Norwegian pilgrim, provides fruit and all sorts of other food, as well as shelter, for free to all the pilgrims who pass. He lives here year-round, sleeping outside without electricity or a watch or a care in the world. And he has the best apricots on the Camino Francés.

I caught up with him last year too (2017). I was grateful to be able to thank him again for helping so many pilgrims cross over the raging rain filled stream at the bottom of the hill by his place in 2016. He was standing in the water helping everyone, including yours truly, safely cross was what was a dangerous place to pass. He is definitely one of the Camino Angels.

If you look hard, you can find his donativo box hidden behind his cart.

Buen Camino
