The food looks tired and cold (like winter pilgrims). I would not pay Pilgrim's Meal rates for that.
We have the same type of food. That is why I would feel at home with what you had - steaming hot and the rice separate from the stew.

I don't know if Orisson refuge is still like this, but I remember the French propietress cooking massive cassoulets and roasts, and saying terribly disparaging things about Spanish cooking, like hers was the last bastion of cuisine we would experience for Quite Some Time.
