I'm finishing my first Camino with my 83 year old father tomorrow. I want to celebrate the Camino and father's day with a nice meal. Where in Santiago de Compostela would you recommend?
My apologies for repeat of possible past posts. I did a search and did not find.
Thank you in advance, Kim

Well done to you both!

It's very hard to give recommendations I think.
Management changes, chefs change, menus change.
We all have different tastes, budgets and expectations.

I was once given a recommendation for 'one of the best' meals in Santiago.
It turned out to be the worst meal we had in our whole trip.

I was in Santiago twice in the last month or so and did not have a meal I would 'recommend' as such.
As mentioned above, what kind of budget are you looking at?

The 'tasting menu' at the Parador was very nice. At least it was last month.
I often drop in to the Cafe Casino. But maybe its a bit touristy?

But there are so many nice places it would be hard to pick.

I had some nice meals up near Casa Ivar in the Praza da Universidade.
Lots of outside tables.
Often, places away from the central tourist area are nicer.

"Camino from 2013 to 2019" paused for now...
The Menu del Dia in San Martin Pinaro is generally very good. Served between about 12.30 and 15.00.

Impressive location. Attentive service.

Reception speaks good English (and other languages). Phone to check details of times etc.

There may also be an evening menu.

Well done!

Some in the past; more in the future!
The Greenhouse is my favourite place in Santiago. It’s owned and run by a lovely woman (Shanta) of Welsh and Indian origin who was born in Hong Kong. When she moved to Santiago she couldn’t find a restaurant that served the kind of Asian food she grew up eating, so she opened it herself!

I have been taken several times to the San Clemente in the Rua (surprise!) San Clemente, but 5 minutes from the Obradoiro Plaza.

I too had the luxury to be invited to San Clemente ( memorable afternoons ;) ) and it is the perfect spot to have a celebratory dinner.
Even when it is crowded the restaurant has a laidback feeling.
Watch out for the orujo!

One of my favorites has been the Dezaseis.

I had seen a NYT review and thought i’d give it a try. It has a very nice atmosphere and good food. I went to it several times over the years. Always good. The last time I was in Santiago, though, it was closed. Someone later told me that it has now reopened. I’m not sure if that means new management or big changes in the food or the quality, but it’s a nice location, right on the Camino on the way into the Praza Cervantes.

Greenhouse is a very nice place, we had some great food but it was even better to talk with Shanta.
I will come back for sure!
It was such a wonderful I surprise I tried to go back a second night, but it was fully booked (in November). Being a small intimate place is part of its appeal, but it means places are limited. And getting so many recs from the forum is not going to make that any easier, so it may be a good idea to book.

Thank you to all. I'm staying at pension Fonseca after attending Pilgrims mass today. Life is very good! Thank you to this Forum for all the recommendations. I especially appreciated staying at the montesorino in armenteira and the town of armenteira. The stone and water route was the most beautiful walk in my life. Walking with my father was reflective. I'm at peace, happy, calm.

How about the Parador?

At the end of my Norte I met a fellow New Yorker who was a retired fireman. He was a huge New york Yankees and Giants fan so we instantly bonded. He was walking with about8 others. He invited us (I was shocked that I was invited given I had only known him for 2 days) to dinner at the Parador, At dinner he immediately ordered 3 bottles of wine and a few appetizers. He then insisted we all order our own appetizers as well as our meals and desserts. I think we had 6 bottles of wine plus dinner for 10. I can't imagine what the bill was. My whole meal was fantastic. I can't tell you what I had as I asked our wonderful and really knowledgeable waiter who served us to pick out my meal. We talked about a few things but I left it to him. He did a masterful job! WOW it was a night to remember!
I have been lucky enough to get the free pilgrim lunch 3 times over the years. (Ah the benefits of arriving in Santiago by about 10AM in December) I was thankful and had great company and a nice meal. But never confuse a wonderful pilgrim meal with the gourmet feast in that beautiful restaurant.

Congratulations on your Caminos! Casting my vote also for The Greenhouse! But they only have maybe six tables, so a reservation might be a good idea. Also, there is a fantastic churros place called La Quinta. Finally, there is a place that’s like a food court, not in old town. There are multiple restaurants and a brewery to choose from while you sit in the middle. I think it’s called La Galiciana.

Down bag (90/10 duvet) of 700 fills with 180 g (6.34 ounces) of filling. Mummy-shaped structure, ideal when you are looking for lightness with great heating performance.

I’m always recommending Casa Marcelo… an Asian fusion with Galician restaurant. Not only transcendent food, but a real experience with friends (ideally). It has a Michelin star, which speaks for itself and the owner Marcelo is a genuine character

A Hearty Congrats - thats ONE MAJOR Accomplishment (as pretty much most of us here know)
The 3 Restaurants that I had wonderful meals (Basically celebrating my accomplishment with some members of my Camino family (sort of bittersweet last days together) and incl. my wife who flew to SdC to meet me) in no particular order are:
A Noiesa ~ Casa De Comidas - Rúa do Franco, 40
El Papatorio (El Papatorio Tapas y Brasas) - Rúa do Franco, 20 (I think someone already mentioned this one)
Restaurante Ribadaviav- Rúa do Franco, 16

Gees I guess we all just really liked to hang out at Rua do Franco (God only Knows - there are not enough restaurants on it.... 🤣 )

Probably too late for your use, but the food at Casa de Xanatar O Dezaseis is sublime. Rua de San Pedro, 16. If there's still time, give your heroic father the meal he deserves. Order the wine by the bottle and do not skip dessert.
Thank you. Yes, we had a beautiful meal at Don Quioxte with a bottle of wine and dessert. It was sublime.Cheers!

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.

I was just there in January and had the best meal/service at A Fuego Lento Bistró. It was reasonably priced and casual enough that we didn’t feel weird in our hiking clothes but elegant as well so it felt special.
It’s near the cathedral on Rua Vilar.
