Camino de Frances June (2017)
Hello,

I'm in Bercianos del Camino tonight. Having an incredible time. Past 2 days have been full on with rain & strong head winds. Temperature is cool so walking the Meseta doesn't feel so challenging once you get your head around the wind!

I'm planning a rest day in Astorga and wondered if anyone has recommendations for nice hostal or hotel for 2 nights. Not too expensive. Also a place for 1 night in Leon. I'm not ready for another rest day as early as Leon.

Any help always appreciated :)

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
In Leon the Benedictinas next to their albergue mentioned above by Anemone also offer the
Hospideria PAX
with private accommodation which is very nice and which you can reserve.
Here is their web--
http://www.hospederiapax.com/

Their Pilgrim albergue provides dormitory accommodation for 134 with shared facilities but does not accept reservations except for groups. Both facilities are located on the plaza Santa María del Camino.

The Hospideria has a pleasant dining room open to all with a good inexpensive daily menu .

While often staying in the pilgrim albergue I peeked at the Hospideria facilities which appear to be very comfortable. The choice is up to you!

Do check out the many tips/advice in this earlier forum thread re the Leon to Astorga stretch.

...and ship it to Santiago for storage. You pick it up once in Santiago. Service offered by Casa Ivar (we use DHL for transportation).
The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
Last year stayed at Leon Hostel, Ancha 8 by the cathedral. Was about 30-35eu for a twin room with bath. You can check particulars and reserve on booking.com. It is well located and very clean and decent.

Down bag (90/10 duvet) of 700 fills with 180 g (6.34 ounces) of filling. Mummy-shaped structure, ideal when you are looking for lightness with great heating performance.

I actually stayed at the Parador in Leon. Definitely a splurge, but much more reasonably-priced that other Paradors, and very pleasant indeed.

If you are looking for a hotel at Astorga, after Leon, consider the Hotel Gaudi (***). Ask for a street facing room. It is not noisy, but the views are wonderful. The bathrooms have TUBS!

Directly opposite the building is the wonderful, whimsical home designed for the local Archbishop by famous architect Antonini Gaudi. When completed it was considered far to ostentatious and "over the top" for the cleric to move into. So, it is now a museum.

The hotel is not cheap. However, if you are with another person, the double rate is reasonable, when shared. The location is great.

I have walked through Astorga three times. Each time, I look forward to staying there. You can book it through booking.com.

I hope this helps.
