O Cebreiro - article on its history

Bradypus

Migratory hermit
Time of past OR future Camino
Too many and too often!
La Voz de Galicia has an article marking a conference held in O Cebreiro which discussed the history of the village and its significance in the history of the Camino. It includes a remarkable photo from 1929 which gives some idea of how much change there has been in the past century.

Ideal pocket guides for during and after your Camino. Each weighs just 40g (1.4 oz).
O Cebreiro is more than an "aldea".
Because it has a church and a cemetery, is a " parroquia" (parish). There are three "aldeas" that share the parish: Barxamaior, Fonteferreira and Fontevedra.
The municipality is Pedrafita do Cebreiro where is the council house. Pedrafita has twelve "parroquias" in total : O Cebreiro, Fonfria, Liñares, Hospital, etc.

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
Thank you for this post and the link. Also thanks to Google Translate - a very interesting refreshing of the history of this little village.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
For a very readable deep dive into the fascinating history of O Cebreiro, I recommend Laurie Dennett's "Waybread: Memories of the Camino for the Onward Journey," a newly published English-language volume on a wide variety of juicy Camino topics, written by a Canadian historian who's lived and worked there since the 1980s. It's available in paperback and Kindle versions, with lots of cool photos, too.
(full disclosure: it's an imprint of Peaceable Publishing).

Here is a pic from 2016, I love the simplicity of the sketch map and directions "1 km climb up, 5km flat, 5km down". I wonder how the prices are now?
