We will arrive in Santiago on the 14th of August and staying a few days to rest, take the bus to the coast, etc. I noticed that August 15 is Assumption Day and was wondering two things:

1. Are there any special festivities in Santiago that day? (I assume all businesses will be closed)
2. During which service would they swing the botafumeiro?

Thanks.

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

€83,-
The cathedral website lists what days the botufumerio is definitely used- which includes the Assumption

does this mean at all services during the day?
No, it doesn’t mean that. When you switch to the Spanish version of the website, you see that it will swing at the midday mass which starts at 11:40. There is a procession with a small statue of Saint James through the cathedral, the Botafumeiro swings and then mass starts at 12:00.

Given the Assumption Day is a holy day of obligation, ie practicing Catholics must go to mass then I would expect the botafumeiro will swing. Cheers

There is usually a fair/ carnival in Alameda Park during this period as well. It's a busy, festive time in Santiago, so if anyone will be arriving around this time, I'd recommend booking accommodations ahead of time.

Buen Camino!

Just to confirm because the question is asked from time to time: The Botafumeiro did not swing this morning, on 15 August, Assumption of Mary, at mass at 9:30.

It is scheduled to swing at the midday mass which is listed as misa solemne in the liturgical calendar but there is no guarantee that it will swing during any other mass scheduled on such special days (i.e. at 7:30, 9:30 and 19:30).

I am in the cathedral now - it is packed, to say the least, for mass that will start at, I believe, 11:20 instead of noon. People sitting on steps, the pedestals of the columns, and the floor. Barely an inch to spare.
