Too many and too often!
An unusual long article which I just came across marking the recent death of Salvador - at various times a hospitalero in Ave Fénix in Villafranca del Bierzo. An eccentric man in an eccentric place. Some mention of Jesus Jato, Tomas of Manjarin and Don Blas of Fuenterroble too.

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
Wow! Thank you for the post. We crossed paths with Salvador two months ago (Oct, 2023) at Ave Fenix in Villafranca del Bierzo. Can't say he, or the place, gave us a particularly warm welcome, but he was certainly a memorable character. Seemed to be very dedicated. Eccentric is a good word. Had a chat with Jato Jr about Salvador. Sad story. Had continuously walked the Camino for some time because he had no family or possessions. Finally landed at Ave Fenix with no money and was told he could stay as long as he wanted. I believe he was there for five years. He finally found a home. May God welcome him into his heavenly abode.

Well worth the read. May he rest in peace.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
Bradypus, thank you for posting. it is a very moving piece about some amazing people.
I met Salvador in Nov 2022. Jato was struggling with his mobility and Salvador was calmly helping to hold it all together, in his own intense way 🙏

Thanks, interesting article. I'm sure there's a good story behind the knife incident.
