It’s not so hard once you get your head around the idea of not needing a physical sim. I look at it like tapping into some sort of phone internet once you buy a plan.
I use Airola - as do many others. You can buy a plan now, set it up at home and then turn it on once you get to your...
Lots of good advice already.
I tried on every shoe / mid in every trekking store I could find. Then I tried on every brand of trail runner I could find - because they had become ‘the thing’. In the end I ended up with my original Camino footwear in a wide fit. Merrell Moab 3 Mids wide. They...
Loved my umbrella on the VdlP. Great for the southern sun and perfect for intermittent rain up north. I had it tucked into my pack belt and could just whip it out and put it away as needed.
However I used my Decathlon poncho (also purchased at Zamora) during the big downpours.
There was one...
If the hiking pants have a zip off portion then they should be ok. I walked Camino Francés many years ago in late May /June. I initially shipped some stuff home and then had to buy a fleece in Atapuerca. Maybe shorts or leggings but not both?
Lots of good advice already so I will add a little of my research
All rain gear these days is breathable, which means in a real downpour you will get wet. The only type of rain gear that will keep you completely dry is some non-breathable plastic - Which would not be very comfortable to use...
I use Camino Ninja exclusively for my route map which is marked in bright red.
I started using this app before the owner died. I’m sorry I can’t remember his name.
It became unavailable but previous downloads still worked - just weren’t being updated.
It’s up and running again. You might try...
@davebugg Hi and thanks for that clarification and data on water bladders. Much appreciated.
I have used a bladder for my last two Caminos and definitely prefer it to bottles because of the easy access etc. I know others use a ‘suction’ system on their bottles for the same effect.
I just...
Hi. Go to Trecile’s link for the full story.
There is still a lot of confusion out there between an eSIM and a physical SIM card
Anyway, I used Airalo. I had a data only plan and used WhatsApp or Skype calls for phone calls.
It took a bit of concentration to set up but once I had a plan and...
Yes - take what is important for you - judging weight vs comfort item. . Sometimes hearing the reasons people take things helps clarify decision making.
I always take ….
* Liner and very lightweight sleeping bag - I like sleeping in my own stuff and being guaranteed warm a nights ( Maybe leave...
Lots of good ideas. Thank you - I learnt some new stuff.
I’m not sure there is one product that will do everything effectively but might do everything well enough.
Ultimately I use whatever comes to hand but generally I will have some sort of soap bar for body and clothes and small container...
I used Gronze for accomodation and eventually found that there is also a lot of info about each route and special details for bigger towns. They also have a map of where the accommodation is found and a link to google maps so you can actually find it.
Then I used Camino Ninja which is again up...
I have never used a liner sock. Just Bridgedale lightweight merino socks. But some people recommend and need liners. I think it depends on your feet. I did have a pair of Icebreaker merino liners but found the didn’t make any difference.
I have a silk liner and a Sea to Summit Traveller down sleeping bag that can be opened into a blanket. A bit heavier that some mentioned about - 420 gr. But I love it.
Ah. Wide feet narrow heals. That’s me. Also weaker ankles.
I tried what seemed like 100’s of trail runners as they are so popular - but none of them felt right.
I went back to my original Camino footwear. Merrell.
Now I wear Merrell Moab 3 Mids in a wide fit - and replace the inner sole...
Look for a video on Nordic walking. That is the style I use on the flat and up hill. Not what you see in the trekking videos but I think that style works better.
For steep down hill it’s still a bit of a clumsy ‘stick the pole out first and follow after’.
This video is not too bad. I don’t...
Depends which Camino you are walking.
Emirates airlines give you very durable plastic cutlery set which is very useful.
I have a stainless steel keep cup which was incredibly useful on the Via last time. Mostly you could get a coffee and breakfast at 7.00 am but on days when everything was...
I find the first few kilos in my pack feel lighter than that last one - and anything over about 7.5 kg ‘weighs a ton’.
@David - I love the magic that happens with food and water over the course of the day - the pack gets lighter but for some reason the body doesn’t feel heavier. 🙏😂
