How light was your backpack for Camino Frances (800 km)

Walk with what you need, and no more. I have never weighed my pack. I have always had a strong back. When I feel off-balance or overloaded I re-distribute the weight in my pack and that usually solves it. I think a lot of people way over-think and over-plan. We all are so obsessed with...

Perfect solution (I hope..) sleeping system

the old journo maintains that Clarity is Good. Call things by their common names, and avoid confusion.

Perfect solution (I hope..) sleeping system

It is when a simple idea like "bedding" is made to sound technically analyzed and utterly custom- perfected to the point it must have a super-scienceified name to justify it's comparatively spectacular price. In any case, I think you carry it around and sleep in it at night.

Perfect solution (I hope..) sleeping system

What the --- is a "sleeping system?" Sounds like marketing BS to me.

Say No! to rubber tips on your poles.

this is the kind of argument made by a half-drunk old bore who's already alienated all the other people at the bar. Now he's gotta go online and haul up a moldy old "controversy" so he can feel listened-to. Go to bed, pilgrim.

Do I need to take sleeping bag for albergues?

Yes. You always need one. Be prepared.

Have albergues stopped providing blankets since 2019?

Re: the kitchen question. Back in the early days, a minimal kitchen was laid-on for pilgrims to use, with some pots and pans, plates and cutlery to serve and eat from. The pilgrims were initially amazed at such luxury, and seeing as many of them were men who had never cooked or cleaned up...

Have albergues stopped providing blankets since 2019?

I don't know where you guys get your information, but there's never been any "official" rules about blankets or washing blankets, before or after Covid. There is no overseeing authority that rules over albergue hygeine and supplies -- norms vary widely, and they are executed by a ragtag army of...

Altras - different types ? how to modify the zero drop & comparison to other wide ‘toe box’ trail shoes.

Altra Lone Peaks have been my hiking shoe of choice for four or five years now. I have never had any Achilles problems, and the cushioning is just fine for my needs. My only complaint is how quickly they wear out! The fabric over the ball of my foot consistently develops tears, and the heel...

Please bring a sleeping bag of some kind

Volume is low at Canfranc, so we stay with real sheets so far.

Please bring a sleeping bag of some kind

I can't speak for every albergue, but those of ours (Grado, Canfranc, and Najera) that use paper sheets do it because it saves on laundering the sheets during high-volume season. I personally don't like them, I find them wasteful and uncomfortable to use, but it's not always up to me.

Please bring a sleeping bag of some kind

I am as expert as anyone when it comes to albergues and what's provided there. It boils down NOT to what an albergue should provide, but what is expected of the pilgrim. Each traveler is responsible for providing for his own needs. Every pilgrim needs to carry some sort of sleeping gear. The...

    The Perfect (almost) Backpack?

No mention made of how much these packs cost. For a few of us, the price tag is a big consideration, and it usually eliminates the ultralite option from the start.

    Who is Gronze?

I don't know Joan Fiol, but Anton Pombo serves with me on the board of Fraternidad Internacional (FICS). I have linked him to this thread. I am sure he'll get a kick out of it!

    Jeans on the camino

I wear jeans on the Way, especially in winter, and when I am walking in winter, high brush, or rough conditions. Other fabrics snag, or flap in the wind, or won't survive an encounter with barbed wire. Yeah, they get heavy when they are wet, but that's why we have radiators. If you want to...

1st Time over Xmas week +2 Irish teen boys

If you take them in summer take them on the Camino Ingles, NOT from Sarria. The Sarria route in summer is a bun-fight. Camino Ingles is much more quiet, well-served with albergues, never far from civilization, but still well-traveled. You will have lots of company, great scenery, and you'll be...

1st Time over Xmas week +2 Irish teen boys

having walked with a teenager whose favorite activity was gaming and who had little real clue what he was getting into... No. Not a great idea. Unless the pilgrim is very fit and also keen to go, it's just too much.

    Drones

Some people feel compelled to fly drones over the Camino. Others take photos of everything around them. Most of them post their pictures somewhere for others to see. Thousands and thousands of pictures and images... just check out the media files here on the forum! Some of the material is...

Will I need a Head Torch?

I see pilgrims using headlights. I don't use them. Never have. I think sometimes they give pilgrims a false sense of security. I see pilgrims with their little lights on, walking in the pre-dawn mist along the berm of the twisty, hilly N-120 highway in their dark clothing. They are almost...

Will I need a Head Torch?

More Stuff. I have been camino-ing since the stone age and somehow have survived all that time without ever putting on a head torch. For a while I had a collection of head torches in a drawer that pilgrims left behind, because they found they didn't need them, either.
