Message from the Roncesvalles albergue - a difficult day.

He does that because the Aragonese pilgrim route predates the St. Jean/Roncesvalles one. The pilgrim shelter/monastery in Roncesvalles was founded by monks from the monastery at Santa Cristina de Somport, the Camino pilgrim center cited by Codex Calixtinus as equal to Rome or Jerusalem. Back...

    In Spanish they're called "chopos."

standard of living/quality of life in Spain

I can hear birds singing outside at 2 a.m. I wake to the sound of church bells. The children playing in the plaza speak three languages among them, but they understand one another. We can watch them play from the terrace of the local bar, where a glass of quality wine costs 1.30 euro, and comes...

    Stomach Bug on Meseta

If there was bad water in Carrion de los Condes, wouldn't the people of Carrion de los Condes be sick, too? If a restaurant in Fromista was selling bad food, wouldn't enough locals get sick that they'd figure it out and shut it down? Why is it only the pilgrims have these illnesses, while the...

Message from the Roncesvalles albergue - a difficult day.

Pilgrims need to remember they are not customers. Nobody owes them anything, including a trouble-free breezy check-in, or even a bed. The people working at Roncesvalles are volunteers, and should be treated with respect and kindness, no matter who else is in line.

    Stomach Bug on Meseta

If it was the water, EVERYONE would be sick. At least this thread isn't hauling out the old "bad water on the meseta" trope.

Message from the Roncesvalles albergue - a difficult day.

there is ALWAYS a solution. Spain is a civilized country deeply invested in keeping pilgrims from freezing. If you're really stuck, use your AlertCops app to get help. You might not get the Instagram-ready suite you imagined, but you won't be left on the street.

Message from the Roncesvalles albergue - a difficult day.

I oversee operations at the municipal albergue in Najera. There is often a queue there during high season. We will sometimes move particular pilgrims to the front of the line -- elderly people, handicapped people, and those traveling with small children. It is rare to hear complaining, but it's...

LIVE from the Camino Current big wave at beginning of Francés

Pilgrims sleeping on floors, in doorways, outside??? OMG!!! We have upgraded and monetized and marketed the camino right back to the Old Days, when lords and ladies slept secure in their pre-booked beds, and pilgrims slept on floors, in doorways, and outside.

    DETOUR: bridge out near Canfranc

the river has a massive dam across it, upstream. I have not seen this part of the river in flood, ever, but I cannot imagine they will build even a temporary structure that's going to be carried away with the snow melt.

    DETOUR: bridge out near Canfranc

There is nothing dangerous about crossing this way. I was up there last week when the work was just starting on the temporary fix, and even without it, the river was easily crossed by someone reasonably fit. The photos do not give a clear picture of the whole setup. There was never any big risk...

A lot of people bring guitars on the camino. Some of them know how to play them.

Listening to Music/Audiobooks/Podcasts while making the pilgrimage?

Silence is God's first language. If you are here to seek God's voice, you gotta stop drowning your mind in media and music and noise and news. The pilgrimage is a prime opportunity to Simplify. Quiet your mind. Step into silence. If you feel called to make the Camino pilgrimage, your spirit is...

Just lay that down and walk away from it.

    Bar etiquette

I will bring back a cup and a saucer, but nothing more than that. I have been told more than once "that's my job! If you keep doing that, I will be out of work..."
