Will the Protest Against Tourists in Barcelona Come to Santiago?

Oh my, such anger. And for what? Because I do not write in the highly intelligent atmosphere of some of you and my "poorly worded" question is "too complex" does not mean it is not an understandable question. I would not have asked the question (#268) if I "knew the answer 270 posts ago"...

Will the Protest Against Tourists in Barcelona Come to Santiago?

My original post from a month ago (9 July) was a simple question: "Will the Protest Against Tourists in Barcelona Come to Santiago?". For me, the simple answer is, YES. The next question is, when? Followed by, in what form?

Will the Protest Against Tourists in Barcelona Come to Santiago?

Simple answer: Very poor phrasing. Maybe I should have asked if the squirt gun-type protest happening in Barcelona would also begin happening in Santiago. My question was specific to Santiago as I had no idea how strong the Pilgrim/Tourist anger was in the greater Santiago area. By opening...

Will the Protest Against Tourists in Barcelona Come to Santiago?

Are "Smelly" Hipsters ruining Spain's Camino de Santiago? This was originally published on 31 July 2017 by El Pais-English-7 years ago. The protests are specifically to Lagrono and more than just about "pushing up prices and forcing locals out." (These residents have some very specific...

Will the Protest Against Tourists in Barcelona Come to Santiago?

It has been said in various ways in this thread, but it is worth repeating: To some local residents along the Camino (including Santiago), Pilgrims/Tourists are one and the same.

Will the Protest Against Tourists in Barcelona Come to Santiago?

Since 1st posted, this thread seems to have traveled all over the viewpoint map. So, I thought I might add another possible discussion to the thread: The very wealthy just outside of Madrid may not be concerned about Airbnb's, but they are certainly concerned about proposed development...

Will the Protest Against Tourists in Barcelona Come to Santiago?

I'm quite sure the many residents protesting in Barcelona, or anywhere along the Camino (including Santiago) will not describe the housing prices and shortage for local and permanent residents to the likes of Airbnb's, etc. will describe their actions as hysteria.

Will the Protest Against Tourists in Barcelona Come to Santiago?

Lewd tourist antics on Florence statue. This is the type of incident that local Camino residents will use to argue unless some positive action is taken; Santiago (or some communities along the Camino) will suffer the same fate. "This is the result of years of attempts at turning Florence into...

Will the Protest Against Tourists in Barcelona Come to Santiago?

Well, OK, I give in. Let's keep this thread going. That being the case, I have attached an article from Travel+Leisure magazine with their top cities to visit in Europe—I do so without comment...

Will the Protest Against Tourists in Barcelona Come to Santiago?

Yes, as the Original Poster, sadly, I agree. My original post concerned Santiago and the immediate area specifically. Later, in post #26, I asked what I thought was a serious and legitimate question: How much sway does the Church have in problems of local housing? This was not intended to be...

Will the Protest Against Tourists in Barcelona Come to Santiago?

One of the signs in one of the posted photos uses the word. This term, "gringo", is a negative (some say racist) term used throughout Latin America to refer to all white people regardless of their country of origin. It appears some people in Spain also use the word for a similar effect. The use...

Pilgrim attacked by bird of prey

Of course, I'm not serious. That is why I suggested Googling the subject. There is, indeed, a wealth of information on the subject. It is "A conspiracy theory that satirizes conspiracy theories"--it is a well-known satire. I had hoped people would do a simple search of my statement instead of...

Pilgrim attacked by bird of prey

If only all peregrinos/nas would understand that Birds Aren't Real!! Read the truth!!! Then google the wealth of information on the subject. https://www.thecuratoreum.com/p/birds-aren-t-real

Will the Protest Against Tourists in Barcelona Come to Santiago?

@Getwood, I agree with @VNwalking, do not be discouraged. Stay away from all Airbnb's and hotels. Stop a mile/km before or after the suggested stop in the guidebooks. You will be surprised how much you enjoy the smaller Gite's/Hostels--and the families that run them.

Will the Protest Against Tourists in Barcelona Come to Santiago?

OK, as an addendum to my attachment, "Conflicting Times on the Camino De Santiago," at #55 above, I thought I would research The Ashram mentioned (in a somewhat negative light) in the attachment. (I had never heard of it). I did so because the Santa Monica Mountains in Los Angeles County...

Will the Protest Against Tourists in Barcelona Come to Santiago?

Well, my friends, this thread may not have answered my initial question on the effects of tourism/pilgrims on Santiago, but it certainly has initiated interesting comments. Like Kathar1na, I prefer to read local news. This type of news usually reflects a truer view of local perspectives on local...

Will the Protest Against Tourists in Barcelona Come to Santiago?

Weeblair1967, I thought I had asked a simple question with my original post. I knew if this thread were to have more than a few comments there would be disagreements--and there have been. But the comments have been respectful, as they should be in this forum. There is no reason for you to have...

Will the Protest Against Tourists in Barcelona Come to Santiago?

And...once again, I hope I have properly downloaded the attached article: In A Holy City Clogged By Tourism, Locals Say 'Enough is Enough.' This was published by Fodor's Travel last October 2023. The negative effects of both tourists and pilgrims are spoken about. For those of you who see no...

Will the Protest Against Tourists in Barcelona Come to Santiago?

This is an enlightened comment from someone who does not live in the problem area. My original post was a simple question about the effects of over-tourism in the greater Santiago area. It was not intended to be political. For the residents of Santiago, over-tourism is not a gut reaction...

Will the Protest Against Tourists in Barcelona Come to Santiago?

This was a Google cursory search for cruise ships offering excursions to Santiago. Princess Cruises are not alone in this. There are Pilgrims to Santiago and then there are tourists--cruise ship passengers on excursions are tourists, they are not Pilgrims!! My original post was to start a...
