Managed to get my 1st long training hike done last weekend, left Dublin Castle at midnight Friday and arrived a little before 2 pm and 55 kms later at Glenmalure in County Wicklow. The route followed recreates the route taken by Art O'Neill and Hugh O'Donnell in 1592 on their escape from Dublin Castle, the 1st half of the route is on city and quiet rural roads and the 2nd half is over rough mountain ground with the last 4 kms down Glenmalure valley on forest trails. A little longer than most peoples training hikes but as a current diabetic and former chain smoker, I hope those who have doubts about managing to get into shape for the camino might find a little of theirs worries less pressing.

"A little longer than most peoples training hikes' is quite an understatement unless you're planning to make Santiago in under three weeks! Take it easy. I'm sure your body knows what it's in for now. The most I ever did was three 25k back to back and had no trouble at all in the 75+ age class!

Hi indyinmaine, this years camino will be with three friends from the gentler gender so won't be planning anything like my training distances but like to be a lot fitter than the minimum as if any of the 3 ladies have problems I might find myself carrying a lot of their backpack contents. Managed St Jean to Santiago comfortably in 21 days in 2013 with only a slightly sore shoulder in the middle week to give me any problems.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
Hey Super us Irish Ladies don't take kindly to inference you know, will you be carrying hair dryers for them too!

Hmmm.... Hope the 3 guys from the gentler gender are prepared :P I did notice you calling them ladies, but figure that in these times of political correctness etc, you just do not know...

Hope you all have a lovely Camino:)

Una, bokormen,I had been thinking that in exchange for my near flawless route finding ability on the CF, they ( Wendy, Rosa and Catherina ) might be prepared to do my laundry each night or might that be likely to cause tensions within the group?

Lovely photos .... was that the Art O'Neill Challenge ..... it is on my "To Do List" ....... looks amazing and of course great training.

lololol... made me giggle and chuckle. Have fun looking for the laundrette:P

Hi CISSA69, it was the same route as 'the Art O'Neill Challenge' but the very restricted numbers permitted on the challenge means several hiking clubs just do 'private' walks on the route in the weeks each side of the event. I did the Challenge 2 years ago in a little under 12 hours but that was the last year the organisers were able to get a permit from the National Parks Service for 500 entries, they've been limited to 200 the last 2 events and as over 1,000 try to enter each year many fail. One friend has walked the route 3 times this winter including last weekend with the group of 6 I was part of and we both hope to get another one done before the milder weather makes it just another long hike.

Link to the event Facebook page is here, entries usually open in October but fill within 24 hours, the very best of luck if you are fortunate enough to get an entry, definitely an experience to experience at least once in a hikers lifetime.

Regards, Seamus

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

I'm making this post for no particular reason other than it may be of help to others. All I can say is it's working for me :D so please don't think of it as the only way to prepare.

Sorry it's laid out in long list, I couldn't get the original format to transfer over into the Forum.:(

The walks are either with shoes or boots, a light pack or my loaded Camino pack. I tend to choose as I feel. Much the same way I walk.:p

None of these distances were planned before starting each walk.

Anything over 5 miles (around 2 hours) will have included a 20minute rest period with longer distances having additional rests every 2 hours or so if I was still walking.
