LIVE from the Camino Thoughts on March travel

Time of past OR future Camino
March 2024 CF
I am sitting in front of León cathedral having lunch and preparing for what sounds like a hot spell coming. The first half, full of physical challenges was spectacular.

A few thoughts on March travel from our experience:

Beds- always available

Water, coffee, food- several 12km plus stretches with nothing open. I would carry more food for sure next time

Bedding- I would have been fine with a liner and a fleece every night. Even a mec Camino bag was too much.

Clothes- you need gear for rain, snow, wind and heat, I wouldn’t scrimp.

Laundry- at this time of year it is very difficult to air dry so I will have socks and underwear for three days next time. You will likely always find a dryer in a three day stretch

Camino families- despite the lower traffic we have had a big group shrinking and growing all the way, Much fun.

Speed- the slower we go the richer the experience. We are likely adding three days to just lope along and enjoy the journey.

Shipping packs- While I didn’t do this I saw it save a half dozen or more Caminos. Great option imo. Donativos won’t receive or offer pick up but you can be fairly sure the nearest bar does. It is a shame to miss out on the donativo experience based on lack of pack transfer. They have been the highlight of the Camino for me, especially the back to back Granon and Tosantos donativos.

Buen Camino!
