    Merino wool is expensive as noted above, and not necessary really. Any moisture wicking, quick dry athletic fabric will keep you comfortable and also dries easily

    Do the hostels along the portugese way tend to have the same 11pm or so curfew as the ones along the frances route?

    If you're strapped for cash, (even if you're not, in my opinion) don't eat pilgrim menus! They're generally not large or especially high in quality.
