    Porto to Villa do Conde

We arrived in Porto and immediately started walking because we were so excited to get going. We had a short day, 7 miles, walking along the river and then up the coast to Matosinhos. That was just right for us. Day 2 we walking to Vila do Conde and Day 3 to Foz. We spend 2 days in Porto post...

Thoughts/suggestions for flights from NYC to Porto?

I live in a suburb of NYC. Last year both Delta and TAP had direct flights to Porto from Newark, NJ, but there were no direct flights from JFK. We flew TAP to Porto. I've previously flown TAP to Lisbon. For whatever reason, TAP flights are usually a couple of hundred $ less than the...

Grabbing lunch while walking Tui to Santiago

Not sure if your plans later in the day include dinner but bear in mind that restaurants in Spain open fairly late for dinner, around 8-8:30. Many pilgrims choose to make lunch their main meal of the day. The menu del dia is usually a good deal.

2nd time on Camino Portuguese this summer: need advice!

I walked the CP September 2023. Stayed on the coastal route for a few days, up to Fao, and then we switched over the Central. We took a $22 Euro taxi from Fao to Barcelos because a few members of my group were pressed for time. Alternatively, I understand that there is an eco via cycling path...

Can I pack my small multi tool in carry on luggage (backpack)?

I brought a very small pocketknife attached to my keychain. It did not attract attention at Newark airport or Porto airport. It came in handy for cutting up fruit, thin rope, etc. I also have a sturdy set of plastic "silverware". Very lightweight. A couple of times i bought yogurt, etc. in...

Lightweight Blankets for Walking the Camino

I walked the Camino Portuguese in September 2023 and loved the experience. I'm looking forward to my next Camino sometime in 2025. Although I didn't need a blanket on the Portuguese, I'm thinking it's probably a good idea to bring one on the Frances or the Ingles, which is what I plan to walk...

    Merino wool shirt

I'm a big fan of merino wool after alternating between two merino t shirts that I wore on my camino. In addition to not holding the stick, they also dry quickly. I've tried REI brand, Icebreaker and Smartwool, and I've found that Smartwool fits me best. I try to buy them on sale at REI...

    On line reservations for accommodations

I had the same concern when I walked the Portuguese. I emailed my hosts shortly before I departed to confirm my reservation and to say that I was looking forward to my visit. I didn't have any issue and everything worked out as planned.

Is Pontevedra a 'must visit' city?

I liked Pontevedra, too. Unfortunately, we arrived on a Sunday and most everything was closed. We were able to visit the Pilgrim's Church and walk around a bit.

Portuguese coastal in February '24 – observations and reflections

I walked the CP this past September and I loved it. We also ran into Lynne in Pavoa de Varzim and I'm wearing the scallop shell she gave me as I type this. My goal is to do the entire CF when I retire, hopefully within 2 years. The CP was a good practice run for the longer CF. I'm glad you...

    OK guys, what underwear?

Many opinions on underwear :) Female weighing in here . . . I bought Patagonia underwear for my Camino. I like them so much that I've been replacing all of my old underwear with Patagonia whenever I can find them on sale. Great fit, quick drying, don't hold the stink.

What should I do about calluses?

I have callouses in the same place: the outside of my big toes. I left the callouses in place when I walked the Camino (normally I have them treated during a pedicure). I developed some blister-like pain on one of the callouses but there was no blister visible. Several weeks after the...

    SJPDP-SDC in 32 days-is this realistic?

I like your plan B, especially the symbolism of leaving the stone at Cruz de Ferro on Sept. 11 and then continuing onto Santiago. It symbolizes the time you and your wife spent together (up to Cruz de Ferro), and then the time with your wife away but always in your heart (from CDF to Santiago)...

Struggling with 1/2 size larger - Lone Peaks - insole recs?

I heard over and over on various forums that Camino shoes should be at least 1/2 size larger. That concerned me a bit because shoes that are too large will make for awkward walking and the slippage may result in blisters on the soles of my feet. I bought a new pair of Merrills for my Camino...
